Design Discussion, 2020
This booklet utilizes a two part design discussion found in a 2009 posting of idgsn, a design blog and redesigns it in a way that makes the reader themself feel immersed in a conversation that distinctivizes both the interviewer, Josh Smith, and the designer April Greiman.
I wanted to keep the design of this playful while also structured as the language between the two was very engaging while also varying in length. I also wanted to make it clear who the speakers were and how they would remain differentiated. Josh always remained on the left side with his verbiage in bold while April remained on the right side with hers in a lighter (regular) text weight. The color between the two is different to aid in this differentiation between two speakers and it changes halfway to showcase the breakpoint between the two parts of the discussion; Trans-Media & Technology. In terms of the background, I was inspired by the playful nature of April’s designs and wanted to reinterpret it in a way that utilized type alone. Intrigued by the forms of the letters found in the language between the two, I utilized these forms to create different dynamic, static, and/or immersive backgrounds on each page that aided in the digestion of the reading while not taking away from the focus—the conversation between the two.
The finalized piece in the beginning also is a continuation of a variation where the weight and type size stayed the same, and there was no color.
