fontsinuse.com redesign, 2021

The aim of this project was to pick an already existing website and redesign it utilizing typography and typgraphic elements only.

One website that immediately came to my mind was fontsinuse.com. However, a twist to this redesign that made this intriguing to pursue was that the main focus would no longer be on the designs themselves, but the structure and how everything was composed/organized. In order to properly assess, capture, and change all the necessary elements of the website, I created a design system audit of the original site and utilized that to update the elements and eventually create version 1 of the redesign.

Realizing that this website had two layouts, I wanted to create a second version of the site as well—one that was a bit more playful while still remaining rigid in structure. A website that I was inspired by in their way of incorporating a hover feature was playtype.com—utilizing the hover to bring different colorful blocks to the front. I wanted to do something similar in my redesign so I took a similar approach and utilized the already made rectangles from the first version I created and varied them in size and position in the layout to create a similar layered effect. In terms of colors, I also really enjoyed how the bright colors helped in the playtype version. So, I referenced the original designs that the rectangles would represent and picked out some of their key colors and incorporated them into the designs to create this similar colorful layered look.

While the second version may not be for the typical person, one should also remember that this website would typically be utilized by designers and/or creatives—who have an inclination for the eclectic, hence playtype’s utilization of it. I thought that if this version were to be included, it could have a high chance of being well recieved due to there also being the alternative more structured version as well.
